Autumn happens to be my most savored time of year. When the days start to turn crisp, the leaves begin their annual, vibrant encore to the end of summer and Pumpkin Spiced everything is back in style. We don’t experience too much majesty in terms of fall foliage here on the West Coast so David Pluimer’s collection of shots from his national and international travels will have to do the trick. Why do leaves change their colors? Chlorophyll is not the only player in the fall leaf color game. Present in other leaves and trees are the compounds known as Carotenoids and Anthocyanins. As the Fall days begin to get shorter and shorter, the production of Chlorophyll slows to a hault, eventually giving way to the ‘true’ color of the leaf.
